Staying at the Fog in Munnar, Kerala

Hotel Review -- The Fog in Munnar, Kerala

We decided to stay at The Fog in Munnar, only because it was some 10 kms away (before) from Munnar town, which we knew would be terribly crowded and polluted.

Villa houses turned into a sort of resort, The Fog is located amidst spice farms, in a complete no-commercial zone. Thankfully then, no noise and hullabaloo of the usual tourists. Of the 3 options for stay there – lovely Villas suitable for 2 families/6 people+ or Valley View and standard rooms, we opted for the Valley View room. With nothing in front for miles other than undulating hills, plantations, tea gardens and a few resorts across the valley, we’d wake up early for the sunrise! The mornings, thus, started with the sun climbing from behind the hills to play hide and seek with clouds, woodpeckers and birds darting between the trees and creating a riot of sounds!

Since The Fog is located in an isolated area, you will not have many options of dining. The in-house restaurant, Alaska ( !!) is surprisingly good though a tad expensive. It lovely open seating area usually fills first! We had their excellent Mutton Fry both days, highly recommended with the Kerala Paranthas. Buffet breakfast is decent. The service needs to improve though as a couple of waiters were totally unprofessional and rude, literally throwing baskets of breads without bothering to ask or see where it was being kept.

The Fog is not very large but has a small garden in front and a ‘clubhouse’ above the restaurant which had a pool table, carom board, foosball, books etc. to keep kids entertained. A few of cycles are available for renting as well. They arrange for nature walk every evening at 5 pm which we took and thoroughly enjoyed … an easy 1 hour+ walk through the spice plantations behind the hotel. It was lovely to pass by nutmeg trees, abundance of cardamom bushes, pepper hanging from coconut and beetle nut trees etc. A must do if you are staying there. (Read: Things to do in Munnar)

Overall a very nice experience. A special thanks to their very warm and friendly front-office staff who made a difference.
