Road trip in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka road trip it was, last Christmas. It was a 10-day trip covering Habarana, the rich temple town of Anuradhapura, the beautiful ancient city of Sigiriya in the North, the tea-covered hills of Nuwara Eliyain Central Srilanka, the beaches of Unabatuna in the South and back to Colombo via Galle and Bentota. We selected the towns in a way that we covered both historical sites and natural wonders. And as much as we would have liked to, we didn’t touch east Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka, we discovered, is a country almost the size of any big state in India – it is, after all, just about 450 kms from North to South and about 225 kms from East to West. Maharashtra in India, for instance, the state in which we reside, is about 540 kms and 200 kms in length and breadth respectively!

Size notwithstanding, Sri Lanka is rich in diversity – one time you are in Buddhist towns visiting stupas after stupas, while the next, you are climbing the ancient city of Sigiriya; one day, you are in the verdant hills of NuwaraEliya and two days later, in the sun-kissed beached down South looking out for whales in the Indian Ocean. And then, there’s Galle with its strong Portuguese and Dutch hangover.

All in all, a country with many tales and sites, we came back with a whole lot of stories and photographs. Our many posts on Sri Lanka bring you tales of this sojourn……we are hoping, all of these posts will help you plan your itinerary.
